FarmLink - connecting prospective farmers with retiring farmers

FarmLink is a list of Minnesota farm properties for sale or rent. FarmLink can also help connect retiring farmers with prospective farmers, and experienced farmers with beginning farmers.

Are you a Beginning Farmer?

FarmLink is for you if you:

  • Are interested in finding farmland to rent or buy

  • Are interested in “working into” an existing farm operation with the idea of someday taking it over.

Are you a Retiring Farmer?

FarmLink is for you if you:

  • Plan to retire or quit farming within 5 to 10 years
  • Want the farm to continue
  • Don’t have family members who want to take over the farm
  • Want to help a beginning farmer

There are several ways farm operations can move from a retiring farmer to a new farmer (who is not a relative). They can start with an employer/employee relationship, farm on shares, or begin with some other arrangement. If the working relationship is successful, the beginning farmer may purchase shares, land, livestock, or other assets. It is advisable to involve accounting and legal advisors throughout the process to ensure that everyone’s interests (and the farm) are protected.

What’s the first step in using FarmLink?

  1. Contact Jim Ostlie at 320-842-6910 to learn more about the program.
  2. Complete the appropriate form and return it to the MDA.
  3. Review the listings on FarmLink, and contact Jim if you want more information about a beginning or existing farmer.
  4. If you’re still interested after reviewing the information, Jim will contact the other party to see if they are willing to meet.
  5. It will be up to you to make the connection.
